Fortunately, the Wildcat proved more than equal to the task of holding the line. The Wildcat was outperformed by the lighter Japanese Zero in turning and climbing, but the Wildcat was much more robust and heavily armed than its opponent. Even when larger, more modern fighters took over the interception role, the useful little Wildcat remained in production until the end of the war. Japanese A6MX ‘Zero-Sen’ Ace – Saburō Sakai (Blood Red Skies)
Blood Red Skies, Tabletop GamesSaburō Sakai was the Imperial Japanese Navy's fourth highest ranking Ace. When war began he shot down the first B-17 to be lost in the Pacific theatre. During a mission over Guadalcanal Sakai was badly injured but still limped his damage plane home and reported to his superior before collapsing. Identifiable by its gull wings and spatted undercarriage, it became infamous because of its wailing sirens which let out a horrible shrieking noise when it dove, terrifying Allied soldiers. Excellent against ground targets and not so much in air-to-air combat, it was produced before the war and up to 1944 which was when it became vulnerable due to lack of Luftwaffe air presence.
