The stout Hungarian riflemen had a long military tradition dating back to the Austrian Hapsburg Empire. Commonly known as a Honved (Homeland defender) their number peaked at over 1 million men under arms during the battle for Hungary itself in 1944, where recent modernising efforts allowed them to hold their own against the invading Soviet and Romanian forces.
