The Soviet Union made good use of medium-calibre mortars to support their infantry, with the 82mm M-37 and M-41 types being the most common. These were very similar to those used around the world, the basic design being simple and almost foolproof.
A vital part of Heavy Weapons Platoons in Bolt Action, medium mortars provide commanders with the ability to arc indirect fire over the heads of their troops, and crucially ignore cover when they hit their targets. Ranging in on the enemy, directed by spotters, medium mortars can control huge areas of the battlefield when well-used.

A simple and very Soviet concept, the name ‘Katyusha’ refers to a long series of truck-mounted multiple rocket launcher systems, designed to provide a massive barrage against a target, then quickly reposition and strike again to avoid counterbattery fire. A wide variety of rocket sizes and trucks would be used, with one of the most common being the BM-13 launcher mounted on Lend-Lease Studebaker trucks.
On the Bolt Action tabletop, the Katyusha sports a powerful Multiple Rocket Launcher, a weapon which requires both skill and luck to employ, but has absolutely devastating potential to cause damage. It’s a great piece of low-cost self-propelled artillery, and no Soviet Armoured Platoon is complete without at least one!

These can play a huge role in the game, providing you with the firepower you need to back up your Rifle Platoons. This box gives you everything you need to support your winter-themed British and Canadian troops with a Heavy Weapons Platoon - two medium machine guns lay down direct fire, while a medium mortar team brings destruction from on high, plus a Platoon Commander to lead them!

In 1941 the Soviet Union’s fortified borders were manned by units of the NKVD (People’s Commissariat for Internal Affairs). These units were almost entirely destroyed in the first weeks of the campaign. After this, NKVD troops were chiefly used for internal security, but could potentially fight on the frontline as they did at Stalingrad in 1942 and during the Crimean Offensive in 1944.
In the normal course of operations NKVD troops set up ‘blocking positions’ just behind the battle line to turn back fleeing troops with machine gun fire if necessary. NKVD checkpoints at bridges and road junctions monitored all traffic behind the front and were sometimes disguised as bridge-building crews or road repair gangs to catch out unauthorised movements. In 1943 the SMERSH (acronym from the Russian for ‘Death to Spies’) agency was formed as a distinct branch of the NKVD to carry out these tasks.
The figures in this set can also be painted to represent the Border Guards units with their trademark green caps.
