Black Powder Epic Battles: American Civil War Union Cavalry & Zouaves Brigade

    , ,
With their dashing, brightly coloured uniforms the zouave light infantry regiments were involved in all major American Civil War battles. There were several renowned zouave regiments in Union service such the 14th Brooklyn, Fire Zouaves and Duryée's Zouaves. Fighting on horseback and armed with pistol, sabre and carbine, the role of cavalry during the civil war was more as mounted infantry, reconnaissance and patrol units rather than the shock cavalry of previous eras. Skirmishers were an important element of armies of both sides, providing skirmish screens for main units and harrying enemy flanks. This plastic set provides enough models to field a complete Union brigade comprising one zouaves regiment of 100 men, a regiment of cavalry, a regiment of dismounted cavalry and a regiment of skirmishers.

Black Powder: American Civil War – Zouaves Regiment

    , ,
March into battle with style with these dashing American Civil War Zouaves! At the time of the American Civil War, all things French were fashionable in military circles – in particular the dashing uniforms of their Zouave colonial light infantry! Clad in extravagant, flowing pantaloons, ornately decorated jackets, and a variety of jaunty headgear, over 70 regiments would be raised by the Union, with a smaller number in Confederate service. Often beginning as light skirmishing infantry, some would convert to regular line troops (frequently due to a lack of suitably fancy replacement uniforms), while others would remain as Zouaves throughout the war. Zouave regiments often saw themselves as something of an elite fighting force, and many units earned deserved reputations as fierce and determined fighters. No Black Powder American Civil War collection is complete without a unit or two of Zouaves, and these gorgeously detailed Warlord Resin figures are perfect for both Union and Confederate forces, adding a splash of colour and vibrancy to your battleline! Box contains 24 Warlord resin figures (including command group), plastic bases, MDF Snake Fence scenery, cap badge decal sheet and full-colour flag sheets for both Union and Confederate troops.

Black Powder Epic Battles: American Civil War Union Brigade

The most basic infantry building block was the infantry regiment (referred to as a “battalion” in Hardee’s drill manual, which was used by both sides). In both North and South the infantry regiments were organised on similar lines. A regiment typically comprised ten companies, each numbering 100 men, supported by staff, drummers and officers. However, the rigours of warfare would summarily lead to a reduction in strength by way of battle, disease and desertion, and a regiment's numbers could vary wildly. The states of the north had a tendency to allow regiments to fall below an effective level, to a point where a number of such regiments would be forged into a brand-new formation. This sometimes had a detrimental effect as units lost their identities and their associated fighting spirit. The most common identifier for a regiment was a number and the State in which they were raised – for example, the “15th Alabama” or the “4th Connecticut”. This box contains enough miniatures to make:
    • Three Regiments (of 100 men each)
    • Three Cannons
    • Three Mounted Commanders

On a damp, overcast Sunday in June 1815, twenty years of continuous warfare the Napoleonic Wars came to a violent and bloody conclusion on a rain-soaked field in Belgium. These wars were truly a world affair, with European powers fighting battles not only on the mainland of Europe but as far as India, Egypt, the Caribbean and America. The greatest generals of the age finally faced each other on the field of battle; The Duke of Wellington, rooted to a little-known ridge, faced, the Emperor of the French. Napoleon Bonaparte, master of the attack, opposed brigades of British, Germans, Dutch and Belgians; brigades of an infamous army that, despite horrific casualties, clung to the ridge for over nine hours to ensure that the arrival of BlǬcher's Prussian army would put the Duke victory beyond doubt. The Battle of Waterloo became a true landmark in miltary history, one that will never fade, and nothing on such a grand scale would be seen again. This supplement for Black Powder overviews the main battles, armies and personalities of the Hundred Days campaign, and includes army lists, scenarios and special rules to enable you to re-fight them using the Black Powder rules. Featured conflicts include: Quatre Bras & Ligny (16th June 1815) Hougoumont (18th June 1815) Waterloo (18th June 1815) 132 pages of Napoleonic army lists, background, troop stats and scenarios make this an absolute must for lovers of Black Powder, of Napoleonic gaming or simply of gloriously produced wargaming books! Black Powder: American Civil War – Artillery Battery

    , ,
By the time of the American Civil War, artillery had become a deadly arm on the field of battle, used in huge numbers by both Union and Confederate armies. Some pieces were still old-fashioned muzzle-loading smoothbores similar to those fielded to such great effect during the Napoleonic wars. However, many more were superbly accurate rifled pieces capable of propelling shrapnel shells to 2,000 yards and more. If hard-pressed, guns could use canister at deadly close range to sweep away attacking troops. Box contains 3 Warlord Resin American Civil War guns with 4 crew each and a variety of gun barrel options (3x Union 12-pdr Napoleon, 1x Confederate 12-pdr Napoleon, 1x 12-pdr howitzer, 1x 10-pdr Parrott rifle, 3x 6-pdr Napoleon & 1x 3-inch ordnance), MDF Snake Fence scenery and cap badge decal sheet.

Black Powder: American Civil War – Infantry Regiment Advancing

    , ,
In many civil wars in history, both sides were equipped in a very similar fashion with the colour of their uniforms and the flags they fought under being the identifying features. This was no different for the forces of the Union and the Confederacy in the American Civil War, and these miniatures, advancing with their firearms in ‘right shoulder shift’ are equally suited to be painted as either a Union or Confederate regiment. Wearing dark blue tunics, light blue trousers and armed with percussion rifles, the Union soldiers learnt how to manoeuvre and march great distances to take the war to the south. Early regiments were of mixed quality with few having drilled before, let alone seen active service of any note. By the war’s end they were a tough and efficient fighting body of men, a match for their adversary, ‘Johnny Reb’. Confederate regiments were tough, with many in their ranks used to privation and familiar with firearms. This was just as well, as compared to their northern foes in the Union they were frequently poorly equipped, fed and armed – much of their equipment was taken from Federal prisoners or privately purchased. The better maintained troops favoured the Enfield muzzle-loading rifles if available, but many types of rifles were used during the war, even old flintlocks in reserve units. Ragtag they may look, but southern troops had a spring in their step and were renowned for their quick and terrifying charges, many emitting the unearthly, ululating ‘Rebel Yell’ to unnerve their ‘blue belly’ opponents. Box contains 24 Warlord resin figures (including command group), plastic bases, MDF Snake Fence scenery, cap badge decal sheet and full-colour flag sheets for both Union and Confederate troops.
