Axis

Albrecht von Zögling is the Axis’ custodian of the Totenkorps programme, and a long-term member of the Grünes Gewölbe. His obsession with the dead led to years spent studying the texts of the Green Vault’s library, and visiting sites of battle or massacre whenever he could, where he would collect corpses to experiment on, earning him the whispered moniker of ‘Der Erntemann’ or ‘The Harvestman’. On 12 March 1944, the bomb was dropped on Dresden, and von Zögling’s dreams were fully realised. Approximately half a million dead now wandered its ruins, and a seemingly perpetual source of Rift Energy was now available to him. The secrets of the Rift have provided von Zögling with the means of reanimating the dead on a scale even undreamt of by him, and he soon developed the serum that would supplant the crude power packs initially used to reanimate the recently deceased, one that could be injected directly into a corpse and have it walking again in mere seconds. Unlike many of his understudies, von Zögling is not content to sit back and observe the fruits of his labour from a distance, and makes it a habit to stalk battlefields in search of prime material for further experimentation. Ever concerned with the effects of wounds upon the human anatomy, he has become quite adept at inflicting them himself, having trained himself over the years to become a proficient marksman, and equally skilled with a blade, and whenever the opportunity presents itself, he will personally lead his personal Totenrotte to witness the glories of his creations in action, wearing a personalised battle harness sufficient to carry an array of medical gear, as well as a supply of serum to augment his Totenkorps legions on the fly. The Totenkorps were the first examples of Rift-derived forces encountered by the Allies and Soviets. Immune to pain and fear, they swamp their foes through sheer relentlessness and inhuman resilience. As such the Totenkorps are mostly employed as terror troops, soaking up enemy fire before closing and engaging in brutal close quarters combat. Even defeated Totenkorps can rise again, potentially many times, before being finally laid to rest. Their decayed forms invariably spread fear on the battlefield, making them a profound threat to even the most hardened enemy combatants. The initial Totenkorps originated from the dead caught in the vicinity of the opening of the Dresden Rift. In the years since, enigmatic Axis scientist Albrecht von Zögling has perfected a process to replicate the effects on the freshly deceased, and developed the Sd.Kfz. Nachtzehrer, a terrifying machine that can apply his serum to the dead of the enemy on the battlefield itself, so that be immediately employed against their erstwhile allies. The plastic Totenkorps sprue features reanimated soldiers in varying types of uniform taken from the dead of both the Axis and the United States, including a US Firefly and an Axis Schwertruppen! The Nachtalben are one result of human test subjects being exposed to Rift energy, warping them grotesquely whilst leaving them with all their cognitive faculties. Terrifyingly, this means that the test subjects were more than likely voluntary, given their continuing proclivity to military discipline. They are unnaturally fast, with heightened reflexes and unlike other Axis Rift troops carry weapons and fight more like conventional infantry, though they have displayed a limited ability to temporarily shape-shift. As such, Nachtalben specialize in infiltration, ambushes, disrupting enemy lines under the cover of darkness, and moving through tough terrain with unnatural ease. The Vogelspinne scuttles across the battlefield on six legs, bringing to bear a variety of deadly weapons that can be turned to any task. The Panzerkampfgeher II Vogelspinne started life as an improved 'heavy' variant developed from the Spinne by adding an extra pair of legs to reduce the wear on individual bearings that plagued the earlier design. The added complication of the drivetrain and gyroscopes necessitated lengthening the hull substantially and the project was dubbed the Pz.Kpfg. II Vogelspinne instead. The Vogelspinne retains the light anti-tank gun and 20mm autocannon weaponry of the Spinne but in a fully-enclosed, armoured turret. Provision has also been made to mount a Rift-powered Maschinen Schwere gravity weapon, or a twin light flak cannon mounting. The Vogelspinne kit can be assembled with a number of weapon configurations, so you can tailor it to the battlefield role you need and your specific playstyle – choose from an Anti-tank Gun, Twin Automatic Cannons, a Flamethrower, or the Maschinen Schwere gravity pulse weapon, which can be equally devastating against infantry or enemy vehicles if you make careful use of Rift Dice. The kit also includes a Vehicle Commander, but can be built with the turret hatch closed should you wish. This versatility of armament serves the Vogelspinne way when building a Konflikt ’47 Axis Army. With three pairs of legs, and the Recce special rule, it’ll have a hard time getting caught out too.

The Fallschirmjäger were famed from the beginning of WW2 for their involvement in capturing Belgium, the Netherlands and France. Though nearly decimated in courageous actions in Afrika, the Mediterranean, Italy, Northern Europe and Russia their early success have not been forgotten! Now they are seen again across the battlefields of 1947; re-fitted with state-of-the-art Falcon armour, it is far more agile than its predecessor shaping more to the Fallschirmjagers needs. More expensive to produce but far more valuable with its effectiveness and more popular with the troops that use it. Quick and resilient, these troops are ideal objective grabbers and shock-troops. With the ability to keep up with. and even outpace, most vehicles. Without the hindrance of terrain you can guarantee they can get to their target double-time. Equipped with assault rifles, they can pack-a-punch and wipe out those bothersome back-line units with ease.

With the advent of heavy armour and light walkers on the battlefield, the role and relevance of heavy anti-tank rifles have been revised. Never intended to take on heavy vehicles, they are perfect for tackling scout walkers and heavy infantry. This blister pack contains a heavy sniper team, an anti-tank rifleman and a spotter. Boasting a literal anti-tank rifle, they have the means to take on the heavily armoured super units that can cause immense havoc amongst regular troops.
