Armies & Legions & Hordes Book by Dave Taylor (Hardback)

    ,
ARMIES & LEGIONS & HORDES by Dave Taylor, a stunning 176-page printed hardback book 10,000 miniatures and more! That’s how many wargaming models Dave Taylor has painted over the last 27 years. That’s dozens of armies, for some of the most popular wargames systems (and some of the most obscure, too!). Some of these have been commissions and others have been personal projects. During that time, he has had a LOT of conversations about the “what”, “why”, and “how” of the inspiration, preparation, and motivation for such large projects. Dave decided it was high time he wrote all these things down, compiling decades of knowledge about completing wargaming armies on a regular basis. He also thought it would be cool to include detailed photographs of his more popular projects such as the Genswick 33rd Rifles, his Warlord Titan, and his Nuln Empire army. ARMIES & LEGIONS & HORDES covers topics including:
    • Inspiration
    • Aims
    • Expectations
    • Planning
    • Motivation
    • Triumph!
The book also contains contributions from some of his favorite army painters including Ash Barker from Guerrilla Miniature Games, Mel Bose from The Terrain Tutor, Joel Moon from the Mordian 7th blog, and John Lyons from Beasts of War.

The League of Fatties – Judge Dredd Miniatures Game

In the 2080s speed and volume eating, ‘scoffing’, became a competitive sport and extreme obesity became the desired body image for many Mega-City citizens. In retaliation to the percieved injustice of the food restrictions following the Apocalypse War, militant elements of the obese founded the ‘League of Fatties’ believing they had an inalienable right to food, which they would take by any means necessary. Whilst an individual Fattie might seem a less than threatening figure, the first food raids saw massed wedges of obese activists trundling forward supported by their BeliWheels®. With their layers of flab providing a natural armour against anything but the most lethal weapons, little could stop them once momentum was gained. Large numbers of ‘Skinnies’ and ‘Bones’ were crushed in the stampedes and from belly flops but, after the death of several Judges trying to protect a food storage facility, a crackdown was swift. Most Fatties were confined to special Fat Blocks, kept on strict diets for the maintenance of public order and their own protection until their weight fell below the 300-kilogram mark.

Block Gang Reinforcements – Judge Dredd Miniatures Game

The ranks of the many Mega-City One gangs are made up of juves, punks, and lieutenants amongst others. Starting as early as the tender age of six years old, the majority of juves carry melee weapons although some may have low-grade firearms. Low-level gang members, punks are the foot soldiers of the organisation, acting as extra muscle when necessary. Gang lieutenants coordinate the day-to-day activities of the gang and are usually permitted to organise heists and run their own rackets as long as they bring in the creds and continue to show respect and fealty to the boss.

Block Gang Expansion Pack – Judge Dredd Miniatures Game

With unemployment and boredom rife in Mega-City One, many citizens, especially juves, join gangs. Many gangs identify with and recruit solely from a single block, whilst others pull in members from all across the city, attracted to the gang’s philosophy, colours, or charismatic leader. Many gangs will simply protect their own territory and try to take control of the local ‘black economy’ of illegal drugs and other banned substances such as tobacco, sugar, Umpty Candy and 20th-century comic books. Other gangs identify with causes or crazes, including the many anti-robot and anti-mutant outfits such as the ‘Neon Knights’ and ‘Purity First’ or anti-Judge and pro-democracy terrorism like the ‘Total War’ group. Others go on to specialise in organised crime such as body-sharking, organ-legging, alien- and perp-running!

Citizens who cannot handle the pressures of the 22nd century succumb to Future Shock Syndrome – a condition known as going ‘Futsie’ – setting out on a frenzy of violence. The thinly stretched Justice Department cannot be everywhere. Vigilantes such as ex-Judge Karl Raider are not uncommon, targeting criminal elements and becoming targets themselves for the Judges. Oola and Homer Blint are, on the face of things, a perfectly well-adjusted couple. However, Oola is one of Mega-City One’s most prolific serial killers, known as the ‘Angel of Mercy’ whilst her husband and accomplice, Homer, is a prominent bat glider. Mortal enemies of Mega-City One following the destruction of East-Meg One in the Apocalypse War, Sov agents persistently try to destroy the Big Meg. Street Judges Expansion Pack – Judge Dredd Miniatures Game

To the average Mega-City One inhabitant, the most obvious symbol of the power and authority of the Justice Department is the Street Judge. These formidable individuals are responsible for the strict enforcement of the law on the dangerous streets of the ‘Big Meg', where they act as judge, jury and executioner. Crimes ranging from littering to first-degree murder fall within their remit and the punishments of a perpetrator can vary from a stern word of admonition, a crack on the head with a daystick, to imprisonment in an isolation cube or, in the most serious cases, a Lawgiver execution round. Becoming a Judge is a lifelong undertaking and many individuals falter on the arduous path. Some end up on the streets disenchanted and bitter at what might have been whilst for many Street Judges Resyk will be their final destination.

Sov agent Orlok the Assassin nearly brought the city to its knees with the Block Mania drug – a deadly precursor to the invasion from East-Meg forces. Judge Death, a Dark Judge from Deadworld, where life itself is considered a crime and the sentence is death. The sole surviving member of the infamous Angel Gang, Mean Machine Angel is a psychopath with a dial on his forehead regulating his anger levels! Judge Grice was a disgraced Judge who broke out of the high-security prison on the Saturn moon of Titan. He became de facto Chief Judge during his bloody coup. Root Board Game – A Game of Woodland Might & Right

Root is a game of adventure and war in which 2 to 4 players battle for control of a vast wilderness. The nefarious Marquise de Cat has seized the great woodland, intent on harvesting its riches. Under her rule, the many creatures of the forest have banded together. This Alliance will seek to strengthen its resources and subvert the rule of Cats. In this effort, the Alliance may enlist the help of the wandering Vagabonds who are able to move through the more dangerous woodland paths. Though some may sympathise with the Alliance’s hopes and dreams, these wanderers are old enough to remember the great birds of prey who once controlled the woods. Meanwhile, at the edge of the region, the proud, squabbling Eyrie have found a new commander who they hope will lead their faction to resume their ancient birthright. The stage is set for a contest that will decide the fate of the great woodland. It is up to the players to decide which group will ultimately take root. Root represents the next step in asymmetric design. Like Vast: The Crystal Caverns, each player in Root has unique capabilities and a different victory condition. Now, with the aid of gorgeous, multi-use cards, a truly asymmetric design has never been more accessible. The Cats play a game of engine building and logistics while attempting to police the vast wilderness. By collecting Wood they are able to produce workshops, lumber mills, and barracks. They win by building new buildings and crafts. The Eyrie musters their hawks to take back the Woods. They must capture as much territory as possible and build roosts before they collapse back into squabbling. The Alliance hides in the shadows, recruiting forces and hatching conspiracies. They begin slowly and build towards a dramatic late-game presence--but only if they can manage to keep the other players in check. Meanwhile, the Vagabond plays all sides of the conflict for their own gain, while hiding a mysterious quest. Explore the board, fight other factions, and work towards achieving your hidden goal. In Root, players drive the narrative, and the differences between each role create an unparalleled level of interaction and re-playability.

Twin It Party Card Game – Cocktail Games

Flip the card, spot the pattern, give the signal and slap the table. Those are the four techniques you and your teammate will need to learn in order to master the art of Twin it. At first glance, this might seem like an innocent card game for kids and adults, but there's a lot more to this family game than meets the eye. It’s not just about lightning-fast reactions – to capture cards and score points in this card game, you’ll also have to learn how to communicate with your teammate… without alerting the other team. Like most card games, the rules are simple... Each round, a player flips a card from their deck and onto the table, adding another pattern to the collection. Sometimes, these patterns will match; if that happens, slap down on one of the matching cards as quick as you can. Now, you just need your teammate to slap down on the other matching half – before the other team catches on. So, if you’re a fan of family games like Dobble or Uno, this could be the next big hit for you. Easy to learn, quick to play and beautiful to look at, Twin It provides a great stocking filler for children or adults and a hectic experience for Christmas Day… or any other day you feel like putting your Ninja reflexes to the test!

Weird Things Humans Search For Game (Mini UK Version) – Big Potato Games

A mini version of the amazingly brilliant, award-winning party game, Weird Things Humans Search For... First things first, choose a player to be the Search Master for the game. They’ll be acting like a normal quiz master, reading out the questions and keeping score. Everyone else, split into teams of two or three and grab a pencil and some paper. The Search Master begins by reading out the first half of a popular internet search, like: “Why do I have so much…” Each team must now try and guess the most popular ending to the internet search. Teams get to write down two guesses: one main guess and one bonus guess. When all the teams have decided on their final answers, the Search Master reads out the list of searches, starting with the most popular one. Then it’s time to count up the points. Your main answer is the one you want to be extra sure about. If it’s the first search on the list, you score four points. If it’s second you score three points, then two if it’s anywhere else. If your bonus answer appears on the list, you get one point – no matter where it is. When you’re done, grab a new Search Card and go again. After five rounds, the team with the most points, wins!

Colour Brain Game (Mini Version) – Big Potato Games

Welcome to the quiz with two twists: Firstly, all the answers are colours. Secondly, we give you all the answers before you start! With 11 colour cards in your hand, all you have to do is work out which cards to play to answer the 120 brand new questions we've written for you. Get ready to think in colour in this mini-version of Colour Brain! To start, deal out 11 Colour Cards to each player: red, blue, yellow, black, white, brown, grey, purple, orange, green and pink. Each round, you’ll face a question that can be answered by one (or more) of the Colour Cards in your hand. Decide which to put down, then place them in front of you (face down). When you’re all ready, flip them over! Turn over the Question Card and reveal the correct colours. You only score points if at least one of the other teams got the answer wrong. So, if everyone gets it wrong, no one scores anything – but if everyone gets it right, no one scores anything either! In our example, two players got it wrong, so the player that got it right scores two points. If you notice someone getting a bit too far ahead, then don’t worry. Each player has a Colour Capture Card to use once in the game. Play this before a new question to steal a bunch of Colour Cards from their hand (for one round only). Keep turning over new questions until a player scores 10 points and wins the game!

HMS Victory (1st Rate Expansion) – Black Seas Miniatures Game (Warlord Games)

HMS Victory was a First Rate Ship-of-the-Line, the most powerful type of ship of her day. She had three gun decks mounting 100 guns. The Royal Navy had always built very large ships to fight major fleet battles. The French and Spanish navies did not tend to build First Rates until after the American War of Independence in 1783. Though launched in 1765 she was not commissioned until 1778. This long period of weathering meant her timbers were well seasoned and are a major reason for her long life. Though launched on 7th May 1765 HMS Victory, the ship was not commissioned until 1778. Over a period of 34 years, between 1778 and 1812, HMS Victory took part in five naval battles. Commissioned for service in the American War of Independence, Victory fought in the First and Second Battles of Ushant and the Battle of Cape Spartel. During the French Revolutionary War, she was Admiral Jervis’ flagship at the Battle of Cape St Vincent. In 1805 she achieved lasting fame as the flagship of Vice-Admiral Nelson in Britain's greatest naval victory, the defeat of the French and Spanish at the Battle of Trafalgar. In the Game H.M.S Victory is a potent force on the tabletop. Aside from a formidable array of weaponry and fantastic resilience, her inspiring presence confers a bonus to all nearby friendly ships when they are required to take a skill test. If Nelson is present, this bonus is augmented yet further!

Orient was of the Océan-class of ships. These were a series of 118-gun three-decker ships of the line of the French Navy, designed by engineer Jacques-Noël Sané. Launched on July 20, 1791, she was originally named the Dauphin Royal, but having come into service during a time of great political upheaval, she was promptly renamed. As a tribute to a political movement, she was dubbed the Sans-Culotte. She retained this name for three years before it also became contentious. In the Game Orient is an extremely powerful 1st Rate Flagship on the tabletop. Woe betides the enemy that suffers the full brunt of her broadside. Remember that you can only take a limited number of 1st rate ships in a Black Seas fleet, therefore Orient provides an impressive and powerful centrepiece for your French fleet. 3rd Rates Squadron – Black Seas Miniatures Game (Warlord Games)

A 3rd rate ship, as defined by the British rating system, was a ship of the line which mounted between 64-80 guns. Usually, this would mean two gun decks. Despite their relative size and power compared to larger 1st and 2nd rates, it was considered that 3rd rates maintained an effective, perhaps even superior balance between sailing ability, firepower and cost. For a number of nations, 3rd rates were the most popular ship size. Cheaper to operate and easier to sail without the sacrifice of offensive capability, the only ships a 3rd rate could not single-handedly engage were larger three-decked ships. A large number of 3rd rates were built and employed on a variety of missions. The Kit The 3rd Rates Squadron kit is generic, meaning you can use it to represent ships of any nation. The frame has options for you to customise your ships, in the form of differing figureheads and stern plates; enabling you to make your fleet truly unique. The 3rd Rates Squadron box contains all you need to get these vessels to the tabletop. These are suitable for navies of any nation. The kit includes a bobbin for rigging your vessels, sails and decals for every nation capable of building & sailing third rates, as well as all the gaming materials for using the vessels in your games of Black Seas.

Judge Dredd Miniature Pack (On Foot & Mounted) – Judge Dredd Miniatures Game

For millions of Mega-City One’s citizens there can be no greater symbol of the law than Judge Joe Dredd, not even the Statue of Judgement itself. The mere mention of his name is enough to give even the most hardened criminals pause. Dredd has been appointed a temporary member of the Council of Five on several occasions. However, he is only truly content when patrolling the streets dispensing the law directly and his well-known dislike of bureaucracy keeps him well away from the Hall of Justice. If it is true that a man can be measured by the quality of his enemies then Dredd will take some beating. Over the years, he has clashed with mad Chief Judges, transdimensional denizens of Deadworld, super agents of the Sov Bloc, necromancers and powerful mutant pre-cogs. Yet it’s probably safe to say that from Dredd’s perspective bringing one of these individuals to justice is no more important than the prosecution of a citizen for littering or a juve for spraying graffiti on a wall. Everyone is equal in the eyes of the law!
