Bolt Action: Japanese Type 91 So-Mo Armoured Car
Bolt Action, Tabletop Games, Warlord GamesAlso referred to as the Type 91 broad-gauge railroad tractor, the So-Mo has the unusual distinction of being able to quickly switch from road to rail. The So-Mo could achieve speeds of around 25 miles per hour on roads and almost twice that on railroads. Fielded by both the Imperial Japanese Army and the SNLF during World War II, the six-wheel-drive So-Mo also served in the 1937 Japanese invasion of China. The vehicle did not have integral weapons, but the crew often carried a 7.7mm machine gun that was fired through the observation ports in the turret. Despite its light LMG armament, the So-Mo provides a relatively inexpensive armoured car for a Japanese force, which has the dual benefit of being able to transport six infantrymen across the battlefield. It is particularly useful if the battlefield contains any railroads! This improved on the previous design by incorporating an elongated chassis, leaving the crew less cramped, and a pair of front-mounted ‘claws’ equally useful for cutting through dense undergrowth as they are swatting away enemy infantry or even other light vehicles. An articulated tail purpose built for the Type 61 Light Shiboru Cannon was also fitted, affording the gunner much more control when gun laying. Given the Type 7’s even more apparent resemblance to an arachnid than its forerunner, and the addition of the tail sting, this inevitably resulted in the walker being named the Sasori (‘Scorpion’). By this time, research into equipping Commonwealth vehicles, including walkers, with automated assistance systems was well underway. Rather than being pressed into service, the entire shipment was diverted to Bovington for study. The Commonwealth had become nervous that relying entirely on the US to provide walkers left it too dependent on a foreign supplier, particularly with the growing cracks in the two nations' relationship. With their embedded short-range radio device, they are also able to transmit their computational data to other automatons within a limited range. Efforts were quickly made to upgrade the Mk I design with receivers. By staying within close proximity the MK IIs can relay their own calculations to the Mk Is, and thus improve their accuracy and ability to execute more complex commands. Bolt Action, Tabletop Games, Warlord GamesThe Isuzu Type 98 AA Machine Gun Carriers married a Type 98 20mm automatic cannon with the back of a Type 94 or (later) a Type 96 six-wheeled truck. The Type 98 20mm autocannon was the most common light anti-aircraft gun of the Imperial Japanese Army, with a range of 5,500 metres, and could fire up to 300 rounds a minute. These self-propelled anti-aircraft guns were not mass-produced, the few that saw service were deployed in the air defence units of Japanese tank divisions. Developing a similar medium walker to counter it entirely from scratch would be too time-consuming. Again, the Imperial leadership turned to their (then) Axis allies who offered to export a limited number of the Pz.Kpfg. VII Heuschrecke stripped of its gravitic jump assist modules. On inspection of the first units to arrive in Japan the Imperial military discovered that the missing weight of the modules actually benefited the walker’s speed and agility, making it ideal for both general combat and reconnaissance duties. Recently, Japanese reverse-engineering of Axis-supplied components has allowed a fully Imperial-built version of the Locust, the ‘Inago’, to be produced in the Home islands. A swift countermeasure was necessary. The OKMO design bureau at the Bolshevik Factory in Leningrad was assigned the task of developing Objekt 231., a heavy multi-legged walker chassis derived from the Axis' Thor. Rather than opting for the Axis' complex sixlegged designs or the Allies' technically challenging biped configurations, OKMO produced a more straightforward and reliable quadruped chassis. Konflikt 47, Tabletop Games, Warlord GamesAlthough the early heavy infantry armour fielded by the Soviets was both effective and functional, it was clear there was room to improve the design. Initial trials to convert the existing design to a more anti-infantry role were of limited worth and a new suit was commissioned to take advantage of increased understanding of the other nations’ Rift-tech advances. The Mark II suits benefit from more power assisted movement, and engineers are working on diversifying the purpose built armaments for the suit. Overall production rates are not yet satisfactory so the MK II suit has only had only limited rollout to the elite Guards units.
