It was mechanically reliable and obtained the nickname "Honey" due to its smooth ride. During 1942, the British Army decided to keep their Stuarts away from tank-versus-tank combat and instead use them for reconnaissance. A number of Stuart variations arose, including the Stuart Recce, the Stuart Kangaroo and the Stuart Command. Making a conversion of these is easy with the new plastic Stuart. The Recce had the turret removed in order to achieve an improved speed and range, while the Kangaroo had been converted into an armoured personnel carrier. The M3 proved itself as an effective armoured vehicle in jungle environments, where the Japanese infantrymen found themselves under-equipped and lacking anti-tank weaponry. This left them with only one option, which was to rely on close assault tactics. The Stuart was an impressive counter to this, and in this setting was barely any more vulnerable than a medium tank. The vehicle was a shortened version of the ubiquitous Sd.Kfz 251 Hanomag series and much like its longer cousin there were many variants fulfilling different roles, such as cable carriers, ammunition carriers, and radio carriers, amongst others. It carried six men including the driver and the co-driver and was armed with two pintle-mounted MG34 machine guns, one shielded facing forward and the other covering the rear and air. The model included in this set is based on the original 'Alte' (old) version which served through World War II, despite the 'Neu' (new) version beginning to be introduced from late 1943. Bolt Action: French Renault R35 Light Tank
Bolt Action, Tabletop Games, Warlord GamesFielded in great numbers by the French army, the Renault R35 was used to support infantry formations as they battled the invading Germans. Designed to replace the antiquated FT-17 tanks, the Renault R35 was a small but well-armoured French infantry support tank. It would also see service with the French, German, Italian, Polish, Romanian, Bulgarian and Yugoslavian armies! The R35 was slow but, as it was largely employed to support infantry, speed wasn't a key consideration, although its two-man crew were usually overworked in the cramped confines. Its armour was impressive for a tank of the early war period – up to 43mm. Bolt Action: Soviet Airborne Squad
Bolt Action, Tabletop Games, Warlord GamesThe Soviets were visionaries in the development of airborne troops and tactics, first forming a brigade-sized airborne unit after successful trials in December 1932. More units followed and by June 1941 five Airborne Corps existed in the Soviet order of battle, undoubtedly the strongest airborne force in the world. However in the desperate fighting of the early campaign these formations were pressed into service as regular infantry and virtually consumed. Airborne troops were finally dropped in battalion strength during the defence of Moscow during December 1941 and January 1942. An entire corps (the 4th) was dropped operationally in February 1942 but while it survived for six months in the German rear, it failed to achieve its objectives. The crisis at Stalingrad then pulled in all available airborne troops to fight as regular infantry again. Soviet airborne troops always fought with tremendous courage and elan, but lacked heavy anti-tank weapons and were badly supported in every operation they attempted. The final version was longer (1.55m) and improved the range from 200-250 yards to 300 yards. The M6 HEAT rocket could easily penetrate 76mm of armour at 30° or 110mm at 90°. The standard light mortar was of relatively large calibre at 60mm. It fired a correspondingly larger and more effective shell over a greater range than the smaller mortars used by the Germans and the British.
