During the war, Italian Alpini divisions saw combat in Albania, France, Greece and Yugoslavia, as well as in the Soviet Union and even as far afield as East Africa. Bolt Action: Italian Alpini Support Group

    , ,
Containing a medium machine gun team, a medium mortar team, two officers, a medic helping a comrade, and a radio operator that would serve well as a forward observer, this Support Group boxed set is the ideal basis of an Italian Alpini Heavy Weapons Platoon! It also provides you with three Bolt Action Order Dice to use them in game. Breda M37 Medium Machine Gun Team (0-5 per Heavy Weapons Platoon): The most successful and most commonly used machine gun in Italian service was the Breda M37 8mm air-cooled weapon. A medium machine gun team is capable of laying down a withering hail of fire, the bane of enemy infantry caught out in the open. Medium Mortar team (0-5 per Heavy Weapons Platoon): Like so many nations, the Italian Army made good use of mortars, such as the Mortaio da 81/14 Modello. A medium mortar lobs shells high over the battlefield. Inaccurate at first, they range in over the course of a game, provided their targets don’t move, of course. HQ (1 Officer Team per Platoon, 0-1 Medic per Rifle Platoon, 0-1 Forward Observer per Rifle Platoon): For every platoon in your army, you’ll need a Platoon Commander. This box contains two officers, which can be used as commanders for any platoon type, a forward observer, which could easily act as spotter or as a an extra man in your officer team, and a medic to serve in a Rifle Platoon. Box contains four metal Italian HQ figures, one metal Breda M37 Medium Machine Gun with three Italian Alpini crew, one metal Medium Mortar with three Italian Alpini crew, three Bolt Action Order dice, and plastic bases.

Bolt Action: Italian Alpini Weapons Teams

    , ,
Infantry weapons teams are a key component of any Bolt Action army, providing great tactical flexibility for your force. This boxed set provides your Italian Alpini army with three of the most prevalent and useful such teams, as well as Bolt Action Order Dice to field them, arming you with the tools to tackle a variety of battlefield situations, and presenting your opponent with multiple challenges to overcome. It contains: Anti-Tank Team (0-1 per Rifle Platoon or 0-3 per Heavy Weapons Platoon): The Solothurn anti-tank rifle was a cross between a true anti-tank rifle and a light anti-tank gun. Anti-tank teams are ideally suited for hunting lighter enemy vehicles, like transports, armoured cars and light tanks. Sniper Team (0-1 per Rifle Platoon): The Italian army had no specialist sniper rifle, but a skilled marksman could make any scoped rifle deadly enough. In Bolt Action, snipers are accurate, long-range weapons that deny their targets the benefits of cover, and can pick out enemy squad leaders and NCOs from within a squad. Light Mortar Team (0-2 per Rifle Platoon or 0-5 per Heavy Weapons Platoon): The Brixia 45mm light mortar was a powerful and successful weapon in the hands of properly trained soldiers. Light mortars lob shells high over the field, at a relatively short range. Though they are inaccurate at first (not that a lucky six won’t result in an early hit!) they get more accurate as they range in, provided the target stays put! They are also capable of firing smoke shells to lay down a smoke screen for your troops as they advance. Box contains six Warlord Resin Italian Alpini figures, three Bolt Action Order dice, and plastic bases.

The Skoda-designed 100/17 Modello 14 was medium howitzer that contributed to much of the Italians’ artillery strength. As a whole, Italian artillery was a piecemeal collection from a previous era, although crewmen were well trained and made the most of the guns they served. The bravery of the Italian artillerymen on the Eastern Front was legendary, often firing over open sights at the approaching enemy in an attempt to stem the Soviet tide. Contains one metal weapon and four crew.

The 47/32 was a licensed Austrian light artillery piece that primarily served in an anti-tank role. When firing HEAT (High Explosive Anti-Tank) rounds, the 47/32 was an effective anti-tank platform in the earlier stages of the war. With a low silhouette (made even lower by the removal of its wheels, a common practice) and relative high mobility, the Elefantino proved itself in battle time and again. Contains one metal weapon and three crew.

Whether it is an artillery battery miles away from the battlefield, a naval gunship out to sea, or a ground attack aircraft high above the fighting, such weapons systems would be much less effective without the services of well-trained forward observers. Each infantry division was assigned its own artillery support assets in the Regio Esercito, and although many of the artillery pieces and aircraft were outdated, they were nonetheless quite lethal under the right circumstances. Given the firepower these forward observers could bring to bear on their targets, their neutralization was a high priority to opposing commanders. Contains three metal figures.

Sniper teams, anti-tank teams and light mortar teams are among the most prevalent, presenting your opponent with multiple challenges to overcome. The Solothurn anti-tank rifle was a cross between a true anti-tank rifle and a light anti-tank gun. Featuring a light wheeled carriage and a magazine-feed, the Solothurn could achieve a rate of fire of up to 20 rounds per minute. With typical Italian panache the Bersaglieri, with their helmets sporting the distinctive black capercaillie feathers, were easy to identify on the battlefield. This support group provides stylish officers along with a medic treating his wounded colleague and a spotter who can be used as an attendant radio operator for your commander. Providing suppressing firepower are the workhorse medium machine gun of the Italian armed forces, the Breda Modello 37 and the robust 81mm Modello 35 medium mortar providing indirect fire capability. Highly trained marksmen and superbly fit soldiers, the Bersaglieri (sharpshooter) were easily identified by their helmets, sporting large black capercaillie feathers. As light infantry troops they were encouraged to have a greater level of independence and initiative than the regular Italian army troops and this élan served them well during the war. During World War II the Bersaglieri became a focal point of Italy's push towards mobile warfare. Several units of these highly motivated, aggressive troops were equipped with bicycles or motorcycles to fight alongside the Italian armoured and motorised divisions. At the start of Italy’s war, the Italian Army had no assault engineering units designed to take on enemy fortifications. The performance of pioneer units in the German blitzkrieg demonstrated to the Italians the need for such units, leading to the creation of the Guastatori del Genio which began training units in late 1940. By early 1941 these specialised assault engineers were fighting in North Africa, and by mid-1942 they were also on the Eastern Front. During the Sicilian campaign the 11th Guastatori Battalion was attached to the ‘Livorno’ Division, fighting alongside them throughout the campaign. Contains 10 metal Italian Guastatori miniatures:

It has been said that mortars accounted for more casualties in World War II than any other single weapon type. Trained and effective Italian mortar crews certainly added to those numbers in every theatre where they operated. Led by tough, experienced officers, the Italian paratroopers were a well-respected foe – during the battle of El Alamein troops of the Folgore (Lightning) Division repelled the British attacks for weeks. The Folgore fought until expending their last round of ammunition, taking out British tanks with near suicidal close quarters attacks and choosing bayonet charges over raising the white flag, such was their elan. Like their Regio Esercito (Royal Italian Army) counterparts, the airborne divisions relied heavily on the Breda 37 medium machine gun and the Mortaio da 81/14 Modello 35 81mm mortar for close fire support. Bolt Action: Carro Armato / Semovente Tank

    , ,
Produced by Fiat Ansaldo, the M13/40 was the main battle tank of the Italian army in World War II and served throughout the war following its introduction in 1940. Although designated as a medium tank it was more in line with the light tanks of other nations at the time. With armour up to 42mm thick, and armed with a 47mm main gun backed up by up to four 8mm machine guns, it carried a four-man crew. Its diesel engine, whilst underpowered, giving a top speed of around 20mph, was less vulnerable to catching fire and had better range than petrol-fuelled vehicles. The most widely produced Italian tank of the war, the M13/40 battled on in the Western Desert and Italy despite Allied tanks far eclipsing it in firepower, speed and protection. This superb plastic kit can alternatively be assembled as a Semovente tank. The Semovente 75/18 self-propelled gun brings some much needed armoured reinforcements to Italian forces. The Semovente was an Italian self-propelled gun, built by mounting the 75mm Obice da 75/18 modello 34 mountain gun on the chassis of a M13/40 or M14/41 tank. It had riveted steel plates, which were thicker but also less sloped than in the original tank. Frontal armour was almost vertical, but it consisted of two plates rather than a single layer, which improved stopping power. You may think these tanks may only be for Italian Bolt Action armies, but you’d be dead wrong. Captured examples of the M13 were used by the Australians at Tobruk and the Germans were known to use Semoventes. The kit has you covered, including a decal sheet with Italian army, German army and Australian Army markings. Contains 1 plastic tank
